Big Bob’s Gordie Howe Tune Smacks of the ’60s

It’s always a treat to hear old sports songs that were written to honor a particular team or player.  They tend to capture the era in more ways than one.  Detroit sports songs like Goodbye Mr. Ball, Denny McLain, Go Get ’em Tigers and Bless You Boys come to mind.

I wasn’t aware of the fact that Detroit Red Wings legend Gordie Howe had a song written about him back in the 1960s.

This Howe video post’s audio track is from an obscure group called Big Bob and The Dollars.  According to the poster, it was released in 1963 as a .45 record on The Globe Record label.  The song is simple, but back then, so was hockey and life in general.  I think you’ll agree it’s a catchy little tune and a wonderful tribute to Mr. Hockey.
