Detroit Lions Video Tribute to Alex Karras

One of the Detroit sport’s scenes most colorful and animated characters is the Detroit Lions defensive lineman, Alex Karras.

Karras was a rough and tumble football player with incredible upper body strength and a mean disposition.  He played his college ball at Iowa and had a brief stint as a professional wrestler before joining the Lions in December of 1957.  He was suspended for the entire 1963 season because he admitted that he bet on NFL games.  During that season, Karras returned to wrestling before being reinstated in the NFL in the Spring of 1964.

Karras was a part of the Lions organization from 1957 to 1971 when a knee injury ended his career.  This video tribute shows some of his most memorable moments in a Lions’ uniform.
