Detroit’s Opening Day

Hello and welcome to Opening Day in Motown.

With winter hanging on to provide a few last icy bites in the air, Detroit’s baseball club will take the field to start the tenth home schedule at Comerica Park. For one incredible afternoon, Tigers fans will ascend to Detroit’s latest baseball home to share in a tradition that goes back well before Comerica or the full enclosed structure on Michigan and Trumbull.

The team record (if applicable) on Opening Day has very little impact on the mood of the day. I’ve attended numerous openers (including the one in 2003) and believe me, this day has very little impact on what happens in the 150-plus games that follow.

The Tigers host the 3-0 Rangers following a series in Toronto that did not go as well as hoped. While 1-3 comes across as being subpar, the pitching showed many moments of greatness and Miguel Cabrera looks like he has no sign of cooling down. Armando Galarraga is most deserving of today’s start following his incredible ’08 season and hopefully the Tigers will respond accordingly.

Whether you’re spending Friday at the park, work or church, today is a fantastic day to continue that great spirit brought to town during last weekend’s Final Four. So, in between attempts of getting your final work done for the week, sit back and enjoy the beckoning of summer and exciting baseball again in Detroit.
