Ernie Harwell calls the final inning of the 1984 American League Championship Series

“The Tigers are celebrating their ninth pennant, here at the Corner of Michigan and Trumbull!”

With those words, Ernie Harwell invited his radio listeners into the celebration as the Detroit Tigers won the American League pennant in 1984. For Harwell it was the second time he was on hand to see the Tigers win the AL flag – 16 years earlier he’d been at the microphone when Detroit clinched in 1968. But the ’84 team was special, they led the league wire-to-wire, becoming one of the few teams to ever do that.

This short audio clip of Harwell’s last inning call on October 5, 1984, is a special treat for all of us who listened to the Ford C. Frick award winning broadcaster. But there’s more – 15 minutes of post-game interviews from Ernie and partner Paul Carey, with his baritone delivery that earned him the nickname, “The Voice of God.”
