It will either serve as a symbol of Detroit’s golden age for all eternity — or it will be completely destroyed. So rests the fate of Tiger Stadium as Detroit’s City Council ponders the issue today and promises a vote.
Demolition crews are poised to demolish the entire structure as this is being written. The demolition companies prefer to tear down the entire structure and have even offered to pay the city of Detroit $300,000 if they are given the right to do so.
Preservationists are fighting the final round in what has been a nearly 20-year battle. We are within days of knowing whether or not they will ultimately prevail in preserving a portion of the old ball park.
