Fidrych Family Pays a Visit to Detroit

What a thrill it was yesterday when Mark Fidrych’s sister, Carol, and her family stopped by Detroit Athletic Co. before the Tigers game.  Mark’s family was in town for a pre-game ceremony honoring “The Bird” at Comerica Park.  Mark’s widow, Ann, and their daughter, Jessica, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Tigers Manager Jim Leyland.

Talk about nice people.  By the time they left the store, I felt like I had known them all my life.  Carol bears a striking resemblance to her brother.  And her son (Mark’s nephew) has the same physique and boyish charm.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t play baseball.  But if Hollywood ever decides to make a movie about Mark Fidrych, his nephew could easily play the part.

Thank you, Carol, for taking the time to stop by.  I’m glad I was able to tell you how much everyone in Detroit continues to love your brother.  He will never be forgotten in this town — or anywhere else.

Here is a video about Mark that Carol’s husband recommended to me.  It’s set to the song “Simple Man.”
