Johan Franzen: Too Smart, Graceful To Be a Mule

Johan Franzen can thank Steve Yzerman for one of the most unfortunate nicknames in all of professional sports.

Yzerman labeled the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Swedish import “Mule” during a Red Wings practice at which Franzen out-skated The Captain.

“He’s big and strong and he reminded me of a mule that day,” Yzerman said.

I’m not sure what mules are like in Yzerman’s Canada, but I think his comparison of Franzen with a dumb, bulky animal is 180 degrees off.  Watch this video clip of Franzen’s mind-blowing goal against Montreal a few weeks ago.  I’m sure you’ll agree he deserves a better nickname than Mule.
