The Weekly Mo: Home cooking at the Joe

Rookie guard Brand Knight played one season for the Kentucky Wildcats before becoming an NBA lottery pick for the Detroit Pistons.

In The Weekly Mo I’ll look at what’s going on in Motown and Detroit sports every Sunday. The big stories, the overlooked stories, the controversy, the absurd.

Home Cooking on Ice
Later this evening, the Detroit Red Wings will take to the ice against the Philadelphia Flyers in an effort to make history. A victory over the Thugs from the City of Brotherly Love will give the Wings 20 straight victories at home, tying an NHL record. It’s been sweet home cooking for the Red Wings at The Joe for more than three months. Their last loss at home came on November 3, 2011, against the Calgary Flames. That loss was their third straight at home, but since, the Red Wings have been invincible on their home ice – 19 games and 19 victories. Red Wings’ fans are excited about the chance to tie the NHL record, shared by the famed 1976-77 Philadelphia Flyers. But this streak doesn’t compare to streaks of the past. Back in the 1970s there weren’t any shootouts, a win was a straight win. The Wings have won three of the games during this current streak in shootout fashion, and another in overtime. Impressive, yes. But not the same as winning 20 straight at home in outright fashion.

Blue Moon of Kentucky Keep on Shining
About an hour before the puck drops at The Joe, the Detroit Pistons will tip off against the Washington Wizards. The match-up doesn’t have the same marquee value of the Red Wings game, but there is an interesting side story. Detroit guard Brandon Knight will face former college teammate John wall for the first time at the NBA level. Wall is in his second season with Washington, and is one of the most exciting young players in the league. Rookie Knight has caused some excitement among Pistons fans, too. Both teams are near the bottom of the league, but going in opposite directions. The Pistons have won four straight, the Wizards have lost eight of nine. The two former Kentucky guards will be in each other’s grills all game long, an interesting duel between two lottery picks and former Wildcats.
